Once upon time, there was a depression. One of the things that are important to note about that time, and every other when prices and unemployment rose and wages and interest on savings didn't keep up, is the choice of entertainment. When reality is painful, escape is sought.
'Gritty' is in the bills piling up on the table and 'dark' is the smaller package, for more money, at the grocery store. They're a student loan with payments that are 80% of what the job pays. They're mortgage foreclosures and credit card interest rates that are 29.9%, because 30% is defined as usury, and interest on savings between 1 and 2%.
What sold, when there was so little money to buy? What will people want in a year? What should filmmakers be choosing as projects now, for the market when the work is done? Go back. Look at the films of the thirties that the public, not the critics, acclaimed.
When reality is painful, escape is sought.
